Psalm 53:1
Psalm 53:1 The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’ They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who is good.
The existence of God
God is. But some people don’t believe this.
Psalm 73: 27 -28 says, “For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end toeveryone who is unfaithful to you.” This is the result of unrighteous people. But for the righteous, those who acknowledge God, verse 28, “But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.” It is good to be near God. Those who are near God will profit, they are blessed.
Now, there are three types of extreme people who we might meet, those that are very educated, those that are ignorant and those in between, some of these people don’t believe in God as Psalm 53:1 tells us, they believe God does not exist, doesn’t matter if they are educated or not, “the fool says in his heart, ‘there is no God’. This is atheism as opposed to theism which is the belief that God is.
Let’s try to unpack this further. We see in Psalm 53 two things, what the wicked man says, what God says. Let’s get into it.
The wicked man looks up and says there is no God
The fool says in his heart, there is no God. Here’s a question, who gives them their breath, isn’t it God? But they still say there is no God. God gives us things and we deny him saying there is no God.
Romans 1: 18 – 23 says, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.
Listen, air is invisible yet real, so why is it so hard to believe God is real? If we can accept air, what is the problem that says God is and is invisible, we can’t see him, yet he is. God is invisible but the things he has made are visible and they are proof that God is. You see the effects of electricity without seeing the electricity and you believe it, so why is it hard to believe in an invisible God? There is a designer, and the universe has God’s fingerprints on it. Many people say, “If God is, show us proof,” well look at what he has made, you see his creation, yet you still reject it.
The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who is good.
So, what are the actions of the wicked, well, they are corrupt, they commit abomination, none do good, and they work evil. There is a reward for such people and Romans 1:18 tells us, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness.” This has taken place already in the past, present and future, but the only difference is, in the future, when Christ comes, He will deal with such iniquity once and for all.
The Holy God looks down and says they are all corrupt
God sees the ways of the wicked, those who deny his existence and he says in Verse 2 – 3 of Psalm 53, “God looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.” This is not just accurate for the unrighteous, but it is accurate about the whole of mankind. We are a sinful people, when Adam and Eve sinned, we also inherited that sinful nature and God sees it. There is nothing hidden that God can’t see, he knows our thoughts, he knows and sees what we do in secret. Do you think you can insult God and He not know? We as God’s people must acknowledge that God is. You might be going through a challenging time but as Psalm 73:28 says, “But for me, it is good to be near God”
