Yatton entertained table topping Saints on the back of 4 straight defeats in the league and ensured the the form book was torn up in a keenly contested, highly entertaining match.
The game started evenly with both sides keen to attack and seize the initiative early and it was the visitors that carved out the first genuine chance when the St John’s striker broke clear from the home defence and was bearing down on goal when a magnificent last ditch tackle from home defender Rob Moore denied what looked like a certain goal, more strong defending from Moore alongside the impressive Henley ensured the home side were able to keep a lively St Johns side at bay and provide a platform for Stanley to score his 14th of the campaign.
The remainder of the 1st half was played at a high tempo and it was a set piece that was to be the undoing of the home side when failure to clear a corner allowed the visitors to scramble home from close range to send the sides in level at half time.
The 2nd period started in the same vein as the 1st and the ever lively Alex Bird up front continued to give the visitors back line a tough afternoon and it was a breakaway from Bird which resulted in a late tackle as the striker pulled the trigger and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, Mike Lee stepped up and made no mistake from to send the home side into the lead.
More resolute defending from Yatton continued to frustrate the visitors and Upshon in goal made a couple of crucial saves, it was a defensive situation that allowed the home side to spring a stunning counter attack and extend their lead when Coupland travelled the length of the pitch leaving opposition players trailing in his wake to provide an inch perfect cross for Ben Stanley who made no mistake from 6 yards.
A tense finish to the game was ensured when a corner lead to another scrambled goal for the visitors, Yatton were forced to defend strongly in the final 15 minutes and were a little unfortunate to concede a penalty when the ref somewhat harshly adjudged that the otherwise faultless Henley had handled in the area. The resulting spot kick was smashed wide of the target to ensure the home side kept all 3 points from a display that left Manager Walker quite rightfully delighted with the effort of his squad.
