Winscombe 3 – 4 Yatton Athletic

Yatton travelled to 6th place Winscombe full of confidence from the previous weeks performance against Weston St Johns and took the game to the hosts early on courtesy of the ever industrious Ben Stanley, the lively combination of Bird & Bell-Langford and the re-called Morris. Yatton dominated early on and it looked only a matter of time before they would take the lead but an uncharacteristic poor finish from Stanley and further wasteful attacking play from Yatton ensured the sides remained level with half an hour on the clock. Upshon had enjoyed a trouble free opening to the game until poor marking from a corner left the Yatton custodian picking the ball out of his net as the home side took the lead against the run of play and they managed to double and then treble their lead in a 10 minute spell that left Yatton rubbing their eyes in disbelief at the scoreline and sent them in 3-0 down at the break.

Manager Walker changed the shape at half time and Yatton came out for the 2nd half with a real sense of purpose and immediately got on the front foot with Titmuss & Lee setting the tempo from the middle of the park and Bird & Coupland offering an attacking threat from the full back areas, it was the later who worked himself some space down the left and was able to provide a cross which left the Winscombe defender unable to do anything except put the ball through his own net to reward Yatton’s positive start to the 2nd period.

Yatton continued to press and the recalled Morris was the next to get on the score-sheet with a trademark late appearance at the back post to finish from close range following good work from Alex Bird and it was striker Bird’s twin brother who scored a sublime glancing header to level the scores and minutes later was alive again to a quick free kick that enabled him to lift the ball over the onrushing keeper to give Yatton the lead.

Upshon rarely had a touch of the ball in the 2nd half and Moore and Henley dealt with the Winscombe attackers comfortably to provide the platform for Yatton’s comeback in a 2nd half display that was well worth all 3 points to send the visitors home happy, Yatton travel to Fry’s next week looking to continue their good form.
